James Gunn teases Weasel’s surprising origin
James Gunn stated that he has mapped out Weasel’s origins but has not told them yet, calling the backstory “a huge surprise” he has known for years. Speaking on The Morning After Pod: Phase Hero’s Peacemaker Podcast after Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6, Gunn said, “I know where Weasel actually came from… I can’t tell you. And I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to have time to tell the story.” He stressed that although Creature Commandos teased parts of Weasel’s past, the full narrative remains unrevealed.
Gunn suggested that the storyline could potentially surface in Creature Commandos Season 2, but admitted that his current priorities make it unlikely in the near future. “Maybe never,” he explained, adding that his schedule is now focused on expanding the DC Universe through larger, headline characters. This aligns with his role as co-CEO of DC Studios. Flagship projects like Superman and The Brave and the Bold remain in active development.
Weasel first appeared in The Suicide Squad, voiced by Sean Gunn. He later reappeared in Creature Commandos and was likely referenced in Peacemaker. Gunn confirmed that the character ties into broader DCU plans but kept the origin story off the table. He explained that while Weasel’s role has grown, telling his full story requires time he does not currently have.
On the podcast, Gunn outlined his approach to connective storytelling. He indicated that smaller characters often support the arcs of larger ones. This method has allowed figures like Rick Flag Sr. and Emilia Harcourt to gain more importance in ongoing narratives. He added that not every character will receive a full spotlight. As a result, Weasel’s mysterious origin may remain untold. Gunn emphasized that although he values fan curiosity, his current slate leaves little room to explore side character backstories.
