Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey just shattered a major ticket sales record before even hitting theaters. The epic’s latest presale milestone at a legendary venue has surpassed some of the biggest blockbusters in recent memory.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey sold 28,000 BFI IMAX tickets

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey sold 28,000 tickets at BFI IMAX within 24 hours, Deadline reports. The venue grossed £750,000, breaking its first-day on-sale records comprehensively. This marks the biggest single-day ticket sale in the London venue’s history.

The film previously sold out four opening weekend screenings in under an hour. Notably, those tickets went on sale a full year before the film’s release. A special midnight showing will kickstart a weekend of round-the-clock screenings at the venue.

The latest record surpasses previous first-day benchmarks set by major blockbusters at BFI IMAX. Dune: Part Two previously held the record with £366,000 gross in its first 24 hours on sale. Nolan’s own Oppenheimer generated £254,000 gross in the same timeframe at the venue.

Meanwhile, the film also set records at AMC theatres across the United States. It recorded the highest first-day advance PLF ticket sales at AMC in four years. Wait times on the AMC website reportedly stretched as long as an hour during peak demand. AMC CEO Adam Aron apologized for the delays and assured fans on X that there were “MILLIONS more available seats.”

Universal Pictures put IMAX 70mm and 70mm tickets on sale one year before release. Those early tickets sold out quickly, reportedly generating $1.5 million in advance sales alone. The first feature shot entirely on IMAX 70mm with IMAX cameras opens from July 17.

Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, marking his third collaboration with Nolan after Interstellar and Oppenheimer. The supporting cast includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. The film will reportedly run for 172 minutes. Nolan wrote and directed the screenplay, co-producing with Emma Thomas via their banner Syncopy.
