Many viewers accused him of lip-syncing and labeled the performance as “embarrassing.” The country star’s set was filled with technical difficulties, including issues with his guitar. This led to an awkward a cappella performance. Cyrus, visibly frustrated, addressed the stage crew and even asked the audience if they preferred he leave the stage. 

Despite trying to save the moment with an impromptu performance, social media was filled with negative comments, mocking his appearance and questioning his performance. One user commented on X, “Billy Ray Cyrus, clearly lip-syncing, looks like he crawled out from under a bridge before this weak performance at Donald Trump’s inaugural Liberty Ball. So embarrassing.” Another user posted, “Omg somebody needed to escort him off stage. Either high or drunk but either way an embarrassing hot mess.”

The performance comes amid a challenging year for Cyrus, who recently got separated from his wife, Fire Rose. His strained relationship with his daughter, Miley Cyrus, has also garnered attention. The two are known to have opposing political views, which only became more evident when President Trump joked about Miley Cyrus’ liberal stance during a rally in August 2024. This division has reportedly caused tension between Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus.
