Benedict Cumberbatch has retracted his earlier statement about Doctor Strange skipping Avengers: Doomsday, now confirming his involvement. However, he later cast doubt on his remarks, leaving his exact role uncertain as the MCU’s multiverse expands.

Benedict Cumberbatch confirms Doctor Strange is in Avengers: Doomsday

Benedict Cumberbatch has reversed his previous statement regarding his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday.

While promoting his new film The Thing With Feathers at the Sundance Film Festival, he addressed his earlier comments in a Variety interview where he claimed Doctor Strange would not appear in the next Avengers movie.

Speaking to Business Insider, Cumberbatch said, “I got that wrong, I am in the next one.” This contradicts his previous assertion that Strange would take a “hiatus” from Doomsday but play a key role in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Despite this clarification, Cumberbatch added an ambiguous remark, “Don’t ever believe anything I say.” His comments echo past instances where MCU actors misled the public to maintain secrecy, such as Andrew Garfield’s denial of his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Given Marvel Studios’ strict control over spoilers, it remains unclear whether this latest statement is a genuine correction or intentional misdirection.

In his Variety interview earlier this month, Cumberbatch suggested that changes in the MCU’s storyline affected Strange’s involvement. He explained, “The character [was] not aligning with this part of the story.”

He attributed this to the departure of Jonathan Majors, who was originally set as the franchise’s next major villain. However, he also confirmed Strange’s key role in Secret Wars, stating, “He’s quite central to where things might go.”

Marvel has teased Doctor Strange’s return since the mid-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In that scene, Clea (Charlize Theron) warns him about an impending incursion.

With Avengers: Doomsday set for release on May 1, 2026, and Secret Wars following in 2027, Marvel has yet to officially confirm Strange’s role.
