Miramax to develop a Monster Mash animated movie
According to Deadline, Miramax has acquired the rights to adapt the 1962 Halloween hit “Monster Mash” into an animated feature film.
CEO Jonathan Glickman secured the rights from Reservoir and Capizzi Music Co., expanding the studio’s slate of family-friendly projects. Bobby “Boris” Pickett performed and co-wrote the song with Lenny Capizzi. The track has accumulated over 500 million global streams and brings in about $1 million in annual royalties.
Billboard ranked “Monster Mash” as the “Biggest Halloween Song of All Time.” Pickett said he wrote the song with Capizzi in under two hours and recorded it in one take, produced by Gary S. Paxton. The lyrics tell of a mad scientist whose monster starts a dance craze joined by Dracula and Wolfman.
Glickman, known for his work on Netflix’s Wednesday and MGM’s The Addams Family movies, said, “For more than 60 years, nothing has said Halloween quite like the ‘Monster Mash.’ We’re thrilled to be entrusted by the Pickett and Capizzi families and to be partnering with Reservoir Media to bring this iconic song to life as an animated musical for all audiences.”
Reservoir, which represents artists such as Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, and Hans Zimmer, licensed the song for the film adaptation. Miramax’s current lineup includes The Beekeeper 2 starring Jason Statham and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. The studio plans to release the next Scary Movie reboot in 2026.
A UCLA study found Gen Z’s interest in animated content rose from 42% to nearly 49% in the past year. This trend supports Miramax’s plan to grow its animation portfolio through Monster Mash.
