AMC Hiker Shuttle Map 3

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) runs a hiker shuttle (link to schedule) in New Hampshire’s White Mountains between its lodges and several major trailheads that can make getting around easier if you don’t have a car during your visit or you don’t want to pre-stage a vehicle at the end of a Presidential Traverse to shuttle back to your vehicle.

The route is limited but follows the Appalachian Trail and the AMC Hut System from the town of Lincoln in the south, to the town of Gorham in the north, making it convenient for section hikers, thru-hikers, and backpackers to hike long routes or resupply in stores.

The shuttle costs $20 for a one-way ride of any length and duration if you’re an AMC member and $24 if you’re not. Advance reservations (603- 466-2727) are highly recommended to ride the shuttle because space is limited, although walk-ins are accepted if seating space is available. The drivers will also stop in between regular stops to let you off if you ask nicely.

The AMC hiker shuttle runs daily from 6/2/22 – 9/18/22 and on weekends and holidays only, from 9/24/22 -10/16/22.

The AMC recommends taking the hiker shuttle at the beginning of your trip when you have more control over your schedule than at the end since their service hours are limited and they like to board 10 minutes before departure at each of their scheduled stops.

Boston Connections

If you are traveling through Boston or you live there, there is also a bus service run by Concord Coachlines between Boston’s South Station or Logan Airport and Lincoln, NH, the AMC’s Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, Jackson, NH, and Gorham, NH that you can use in conjunction with the AMC’s hiker shuttle which stops at or close to it.  I often see the Concord Coachlines bus near Pinkham Notch in the morning when I’m traveling to trailheads for a hike.

Getting to, from, and around the White Mountains without a car is difficult, but those two services can help. I have friends who’ve used both and swear by them.
