Tip #1: Budget & Save

If you’ve reached a point in your life where investing in a designer handbag is at the top of your birthday wish list, you’re probably (hopefully) sound on the financial side of this decision. Most designer bags average around $2,000, with some brands coming just under and some going well over. Personally, we love finding a second hand authentic bag or used designer bag that fits the bill.

All this to say, please be advised that maxing out a credit card in order to own a designer bag is not the move. Instead, challenge yourself and your spending habits to spend less on the extraneous pieces you don’t need so you can invest in the one you feel you do. Or, make a pact with yourself and your bank account early on that it will be a used bag in mint condition for a steal of a deal.

Tip #2: Classic > Trendy

As tempting as it may be to opt for the “It” bag of the season, you may be happier in the long run fighting the trendy urge and investing in a classic designer handbag instead. Consider some of the most classic handbags; the same styles, shapes, and colors have been popular for years because of the unshakeable, timeless elegance they offer.

For first time buyers, classic is the way to go. Opt for a practical, neutral shoulder bag or satchel that goes with every color so your outfit options are limitless. And remember that most designer handbags have multiple size options of one style, so it’s more than likely you’ll be able the perfect size for your budget.

Tip #3: Fashionable & Functional

If you plan to use this designer handbag every day, its overall function is crucial for the flow and ease of your day. You’ll want to ensure that the  hardware (such as zippers, snaps, buttons, etc) is in the right place and designed in such a way that makes getting in and out of the bag painless. You also want to double check it comfortably holds your everyday essentials, whatever those might be (more than likely some variation of your phone, wallet, keys, and that day’s lip color). Today, most small bags are designed to fit a standard smartphone at the very least, but always test it in-store to be sure.

Tip #4: Get Offline & Go In-Store

Ordering your life offline in 2025 is beyond convenient. You hardly have to leave the house for anything anymore, but it’s our suggestion that you make a trip in -store for this particular purchase. Holding the bag, trying it on your shoulder or across your body, and walking around the store could solidify your decision further or you might find that a different style suits you better. It also never hurts to make in-person connections with a sales associate to better understand the brand’s return policy and have a living, breathing point of contact once you’ve left the store with your new treasure.

Tip #5: Ask Fashion Jackson
