Two major 2026 movies are closing in on the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Both movies crossed significant milestones recently, putting them among the year’s biggest commercial successes. One is an animated sequel that has already dominated the spring season, while the other is a music biopic quietly rewriting industry records. Neither has officially crossed the threshold yet, but both are expected to do so very soon.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael are really close to a massive milestone

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie currently stands at $991.8 million worldwide, just $8.2 million short of a billion. Projections indicate it will become the first movie of 2026 to cross that mark, potentially as early as this weekend.

Moreover, the animated sequel collected $427 million domestically and $564.7 million internationally. Over its opening five-day Easter weekend, it collected $190.1 million in North America, which is the second-largest Easter domestic opening on record, behind only its predecessor. Its three-day opening weekend came in at $130.9 million (via Box Office Mojo).

On the other hand, Lionsgate’s Michael, the biographical movie on Michael Jackson’s life, has collected $846.2 million globally, more than a month into its theatrical run, per Box Office Mojo. The film added over $58 million worldwide in just the past week, keeping its momentum intact. At that pace, it could challenge the record in the coming weeks.

International markets have been central to its performance. Nearly 60% of the film’s total revenue has come from outside the United States and Canada. Notably, the film has not yet opened in Japan, where it will be released on June 12. It could push it past $1 billion on its own.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film stars Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, in his feature film debut. Depicting Jackson’s life from the Jackson 5 era through the Bad World Tour.
